FAQs

Post Operative Care and Accidents

What do I do if I have an emergency when the office is closed?

In case of a true dental emergency (one involving pain and/or swelling or the loss of tooth that is visible in your smile), call the number given on our office answering service to page Dr. Knox. We'll return your call quickly and give you helpful information over the phone, then determine if you need to be seen immediately.

I have a temporary crown in my mouth. What happens if it comes off or breaks?

If your temporary crown comes off or breaks, carefully wrap up the piece(s), place it into a protective container, and call our office to schedule an appointment for Dr. Knox to reapply it as soon as possible. Losing a crown can cause a little sensitivity, but typically the situation is not urgent. Do not attempt to re-glue the crown or crown pieces back into position. If the loose temporary is in the front of your mouth or if your tooth is very sensitive, apply a little Vaseline to the inside of the temporary crown and place it back on your tooth. If your teeth do not fit together after replacing the crown, remove it and try replacing it again at a different angle until the crown completely seats and the teeth do fit together properly.

My child has had an accident and his/her tooth has been entirely knocked out. What do I do?

Please contact the office immediately and simply describe the situation over the phone and our office staff will help you determine the safest and most appropriate plan of action. As for the knocked out tooth, wash it thoroughly in warm water and either wrap it in a clean, damp paper towel or place it temporarily in a glass of milk.
